If you could only fish with two Thomas & Thomas fly rods for the rest of your life, which would you choose?
It’s a tough question—one that even the most experienced anglers would struggle to answer. That’s because every T&T rod is designed with precision, performance, and craftsmanship in mind, making it hard to pick just two.
Welcome to Two TTs, a new series where we ask our Pro Staff to narrow down their quiver to just two fly rods—their most trusted tools for both freshwater and saltwater fly fishing. Their insights will help you determine which T&T rod best suits your style, whether you're casting dry flies on a mountain stream or targeting powerful fish in the salt.
In this first installment, T&T Pro Grant Sadusky shares his top choices for both freshwater and saltwater fly fishing:
"This is by no means an easy question to answer! One of my favorite things about the sport of fly fishing is the diversity it has to offer in terms of the immense variety of species, locations and challenging situations that it may present on a daily basis.
(Not to mention the fact that I own many T&T rods and love every single one!)
That being said, if I could only choose two rods I would start out with the Avantt II 9’ 6wt. On my home waters of the South Fork of the Snake river where I spend a good portion of the year, a good 6wt is a must. Being a larger river, taking a step up from the standard 5wt you’d pick up on most western trout rivers in the lower 48 is a wise choice for most situations. This past summer I put my 6wt Avantt II through its paces and in terms of an all-around stick that can do everything I need it to do on the South Fork, it delivered exceptionally. From tucking bulky foam dry flies under bushes to launching a full sink line with a streamer to turning over heavy nymph rigs, I couldn’t be happier with how it’s performed on the water. An incredibly light, precise rod with tons of power and unmatched feel has earned this one a permanent spot in my boat every day I’m on the river.
My other choice would be my Sextant 9’ 9wt. I’ve spent a lot of time with this rod in my hand and I love having the confidence that I’ll always deliver a fly where it needs to go, regardless of the situation. It’s always my go-to permit rod, which has long been one of my favorite saltwater fish to chase. In addition to being my favorite permit stick, I’ve also thrown this rod at numerous other species. It’s racked up quite the hitlist from carp to parrotfish and everything in between. From sinking lines with bulky flies in tow to long leaders and soft presentations, this is another very versatile rod that will stand up to anything you ask of it. Buttery smooth to cast with just the right amount of power when you need it, it’s labeled as the “Saltwater Flagship Series” for a reason."
Thomas & Thomas has spent decades handcrafting both freshwater and saltwater fly rods, and the Two TTs series will continue to highlight how our expert anglers put them to the test.
