Years Fishing?

18 , I started before I was a teen

Who introduced you to fly fishing?

My brothers

Can you tell us a little about your home waters and the fish you pursue there?

Our watersheds in Northern Ontario, Canada are pristine and the fisheries are pretty untapped. I almost always have water to my self. I love to fish the rivers and lakes nearby my home, and within an hour or two in any direction we have world class fishing for trophy pike, smallmouth bass, brook trout, steelhead and more. •Pike are my all time favourite with out a doubt! They are like a fresh water barracuda and will smash a fly with bad intentions. Pike fight hard, and the big ones will give you a real work out. I just love their stealth and aggression, and the element of surprise when they hit your fly out of nowhere!

What's the height of the season for you? What time of year is your personal favorite?

May, June, July and September. May we have a spring steelhead run, June & July the bass and pike are out in full force and actively take top water poppers. May and June are excellent brook trout times as well, not to mention the lake trout turn on after ice out in May and feed near the surface where we can get them on flies.

What are your favorite travel destinations? What's on the bucket list?

One? It would be hard to pick just one destination! I really like Labrador and New Foundland for big brook trout, the Gaspe’ peninsula for Atlantic salmon, Colombia for peacock bass, and my home waters of Northern Ontario for huge Pike, small mouth bass and more. •My bucket list place would be South Africa for tigerfish - I seem to like fish with big teeth!

What you like most about Thomas and Thomas rods? Which rods do you fish?

The rods are well balanced, strong and responsive - but most of all the people behind the rods - the company. I really like dealing with quality people who stand behind their product and their team. Solar, DNA spey and Spire.

What's your current go-to fly?

My “catch all” fly that seems to really do well for me around my home waters is the TeQueely fly. It’s sort of like a big, flashy wooly bugger with rubber legs and I have caught everything from huge pike to brook trout on it.

Other than fly tackle, what piece of gear do you find indispensable?

My camera!!! I can’t live with out it - especially when fishing – I’ve been addicted to snapping pics since I was 14 years old.

What's your ideal lunch when on the water? What do you actually pack?

Ha! Well my IDEAL lunch would be sushi from my favourite sushi bar - eaten river side with a cold Sapporo. What I actually pack is a turkey avocado sandwich, a kind bar and some old bottled water that’s been rolling around in the truck, as i forgot to pack cold water.

What fly fishing blogs/magazines do you read regularly?

I read FinChasers, gink and gasoline, Atlantic Salmon Journal, Field and Stream and FlyFish Journal.

When I'm not fishing you'll find me:

In the barn working, cleaning and sorting out tack, riding the horses, training. If I’m not doing that I’m behind the camera snapping shots, or writing at my mac, or out hiking in nature with Rebel (my dog), and when I’m home on cold winter days I’m tying flies. One things for sure I’m always enjoying being outside - working on my farm is therapy to me - If I’m not fishing (my other therapy) then I am around the horses and my dog by my side. I really enjoy living simply when I can.
